Claire Ashley, Double Disco, 2012. DANCERS: Joseph Ravens and Victoria Bradford.
For this version of Double Disco large-scale, inflatable, sculptures are worn by two performers. A choreographed dance between the two forms unfolds. The dancers, once inside the forms, cannot see the world outside each object or one another. The sequence moves from extreme slowness to extreme speed over a five-minute period. I am interested in the juxtaposition between the formal beauty found in these abstract sculptures and the absurdity of the high-energy ecstatic dancing experience and pop culture activity (Benny Hill) that ensues.
